Welcome Page

This is my welcome page,

My name is Emily Howe, I am a second year at Chatham University and I am a media arts major.  I enjoy skiing, playing soccer and hanging out with my friends.  I hope to obtain more knowledge about business this semester.

IA1 Stay Current

For my first assignment, I listened to a podcast on HBR IdeaCast.  The podcast was titled, "Controlling Your Emotions During A Negotiation."  I enjoyed this podcast because it discussed how all human emotions are important.  They talked about how negotiations are avoided in many circumstances.  This is because negotiations involve risks and if you push too far in negotiations you can end up ruining relationships and damaging something in the process.  If you don't push far enough you can also end up giving up a lot of the value that you put into the negotiation in the first place.  They also discuss that if you avoid the negotiations, it can result in unwanted outcomes. If an individual is going into a negotiation with employees, or staff, it is hard to negotiate things without having an input, and our inputs involve our emotions.
I enjoyed this podcast because it really got me thinking about what a good relationship should look like in the business world.  Negotiations are things that will always come up in business and without emotion, inputs can be useless.  I feel that this relates to a few lectures we have had in class, because we discussed that having clear visions wth group members and developing a clear business and management plan is important.  This involves negotiations with others to establish these plans and I feel that emotions play a significant role in developing these effectively. As for the textbook, I have not read much yet about negotiation and emotions but I do believe that they are important in business and that it is almost impossible to be successful in the business world without emotion and negotiations with others.
For my future assignments, I plan to work on my future individual assignments each week a little bit, that way I am prepared for the next assignment and I wont have to worry about missing information.  I hope to stay updated on my assignments and make sure that I am completing each task that is required.  I look forward to expanding my knowledge in business throughout this semester.
